In this text which relies on both Arab and Xabashi accounts we learn:

- The Walashma were initially helped into power by Ethiopian Kings

- Viewed as subordinates to Ethiopia by both contemporary Arab historians and the Xabashi themselves

- Neighboring muslim states like Hadiyya and Dawaro were victims of raids when they refused to pay tribute

- Ifat themselves were also tributaries of the Xabashi

So much faan about Ifat and it's all for nought it seems

well, I can say it's somehow true because the only strong centralized Somali state will only appear in the Adal sultanate.

don't forget that Somalia was lossly confederation of tribes rather than a strong kingdom like Ethiopia and as you know during the medieval age there was nothing called standing armies but there were levies who are mostly of farmers who have a low quality of weapons and no armors and don't have high morale.

The Ifat only had loose control over most Somali territory outside of the route to and from Zeyla and key towns in between anyways.
Summary?? Can't be bothered to read
Reread my post the ''-'' points are the summary

What do you mean? No one even talks about Ifat most people talk about Adal, Ajuraan, Hobyo and Majerteen Sultanate.

I doubt they were Somali.
The Walashma sultans of ifat were the same royal family of Adal sultanate, the Wali Asma royal family, who claimed a distinctly Somali lineage through Yusuf al Kownayn, a well known somali Saint from Zeila, of Dir extraction: this is corroborated by harari medieval documents, and modern historians

lol isnt this common knowledge? just take a peak at the ifat wiki page. they were a joke and even the futuh opens up with the imam having to kill the walashama sultan and replace him with his brother while ethiopians were running amock in muslim lands

the sultan that was killed was a usurper, who himself killed another usurper Garaad Abun the relative of imam Ahmed, none of them were atual Walashma sultans, that was a period of politically instability after the legitimate sultan died. As for ifat sultanate, it was not a joke, even Cambridge historians agree that ifat became the largest and most powerful Islamic kingdom in the horn after annexing the sultanate of shewa (ruled by makhzoumi arabs related to khalid ibn walid, the native subjects were argobba), ifat was also the first to declare a religious jihad war against the abyssinian kingdom, many ifat sultans like Arwe Badlay, were capable generals who defeated multiple abyssinian armies, ofcourse they also lost battles, it was an internecine tit for tat war, but walahi it amazes me that ifat sultanate even managed to put up such a long war for nearly 200 years, considering it only involved North Western Somalis (northern Dir, Karanle, and some Darod like Geri, Harti, Marehan, possibly also other samaale clans), these somalis made up less than 45 percent of the total somali population (the rest were in the Warsangali sultanate, and in the southern ajuran sultanate). Despite this huge disparity, they managed to defeat the habashi abyssinians (who also used nilotes, sidamo, some northern oromo, omotic tribes etc) who had a unified kingdom that included their entire ethiosemitic ethnolinguistic group except the harla, while also having multiple other omotic nilotic and cushitic tribes in their armies...compare that to Ifat sultanate that only had a few north western somalis, harla, and some flip flopping argobba Muslims..if Somalis had one kingdom just like the coward habashis, walahi they would've been speaking Somali in Gondar and Metekel today ..our decentralised culture made us lose out on the easy domination and hegemony of the horn prior to this globalised world emerged

ifat sultanate was not a joke its high time was when the first walashma sultan invaded the sultanate of shewa and united the muslim states in the horn as for thier war with the solomonics it didnt go as planned and they ended up on the wrong side of that conflict but it doesnt take away their acchievement to win and hold land twice the size of modern day territories in somalia they held on to land inside ethiopia for hundreds of years

just look at the sheer size of ifat

Did you even read what was even posted? :pachah1: Where are your sources for what you just spewed? :mindblown:

The Ifat 'sultanate' was, in a practical sense, a sinister joke. They were put to power by Amharas, their sworn enemy and, as documented by contemporary Arab scholars and Xabashis themselves, they were a close allies to the Christian king. It's even written here:

Their situation was no different to that of the unfortunate predicament of Somalis living in Galbeed. They were granted somewhat of an autonomy, but still had to become tributaries to their supposed sworn enemies, the Habesha.
