Sure was. It was a communist shithole, a soviet puppet state. No wonder that about some 3,5 million east Germans left before the wall was built. And thousands after the wall was built, risking their lifes. It was really that bad. Not to mention the oppression of the STASI (state security police, huge organization that harrassed people and knew everything about everyone)

The Germans (common people) in East Germany hated the Soviet occupation and dreamed about unification with their West German kin.
