Do diasporas in general have a reputation of not knowing much about their heritage?

Whenever I meet new people from various different places that ask me where I’m from and whenever I tell them I’m from San Diego but my parents come from somalia, I noticed that they ask me more about San Diego and rarely ask me anything somali related my cousin experienced the same thing in Brazil when he went there for the 2014 fifa World Cup the brazilians he met only asked him about America, granted we’re both American and American related questions should be expected but do they see us as just Americans who happen to be of Somali heritage? I wonder how many diasporas of foreign ethnicities go through this

The only places outside of my area I’ve been to are Minnesota, Somalia, and Kenya, which are Somali populated, they already assumed my heritage so they never ask.
