The ruler Siad Barre at the time didn’t need them to join as he had no interest. His interest was Somali Galbeed and for that region to join Somalia.

Yes i remember reading that in 1958 or a bit later a referendum was held in what was then called french somaliland to either stay as a colony or join somalia. The french rigged the election and therefore djibouti stayed as a colony of france. The name of djibouti changed in response to somali patriotism from french somaliland to french territory of the afars and the issas. Eventually dijbouti with the help of somalia got their independent in 1977.

that’s correct. The French killed Harbi, and renamed Djibouti

What difference would it make if Djibouti joined Somalia today? It would just be poorer.

Djibouti needs to be a Separate independent nation so that Somalis can have more votes in the UN. The only issue with Djibouti is we need to peacefully remove the dictator that is keeping 99% of the population poor and we also need to ban the French colonial language that is being promoted in all forms of literacy found in this tiny nation.
