Difference in weather between two sides of the mountain

This is why Somalia is so dry compared to other SSA at the same latitude.

Damn those Ethiopian highlands. If they weren't in the way, Somalia would have been green like South Sudan.

Ethiopia couldn't possibly do that. Somalia is right next to the ocean. Thats where most rainfall should form first. If at anything the answer to why we have less rain should be closer to home

That is why Somalia is not bone dry like the Sahara. It is semi-arid. It gets some rain from the Indian Ocean. The crucial extra rain from the West is blocked by the Ethiopian highlands. Otherwise, it would have been a green country.

Go to Google Earth and compare the highland Tigray-Amhara region of Ethiopia to the lowland Afar region.

The Ethiopian highlands make North-Central Somalia dry.

If this was the case then Galbeed would be bereft of green lands, dire dawa and its environs would be dry.

Furthermore the Ethiopian Highlands are a collective of mountain ranges. Not one long continuous mountain range.

To explain Somalia's issue of aridity with the mountains isnt reasonable, because what reason would there be for Sudan? Egypt? The Sahara?

The causes of Somalias rainfall issue could at best be minimally explained by the Ethiopian Highlands

The reason why the Afar and Somali situation is incomparable is because the Somali lands cover an entire peninsula

Dire Dawa is kind of highland itself. 1300 meters altitude.

Even Jigjiga and Borama are.

The really dry areas of Somaliland near the Djibouti border have an altitude of 50 to 500 meter.

Gotta love Google Earth, got the figures from there.
