In fact, a Somali is more likely to be targeted than a foreigner. When the Oromo-Somali conflict reached its peak 5-10 years ago in Ethiopia, it barely spilled over to Somalia. More than maybe a change of sentiments amongst the public.

Not to excuse any wrongdoings, but it’s different circumstances during an active war whereby anyone is at risk of falling victim to war crimes, not foreigners alone. The article mentioned how Oromos were caught in the midst of the war, which happened at a greater scale to Somalis. Anyone suspected of having ties with the warring faction were affected. Which is unfortunate.

But then again, given the fragile state of Somalia over the last decades and the massive influence Ethiopia have had, it has affected Somali policies. A change we’re seeing today.

General speaking, most Oromos in Somalia aren’t registered refugees with any local/international organizations. Instead they are viewed as economic migrants (by law) and lack any legal papers, which makes them vulnerable for deportations. We’re going to see similar measure in Ethiopia as the government have recently declared to tackle illegal migrants.
