This was most probably a result of an epidemic which were a common occurrence on the reservations and residential schools because of poor funding and straight-up corruption. It wasn't enough for the Europeans to conquer native land but they had to conquer their minds as well by sending the children to these schools.

The way the natives of the Americas had their populations and cultures destroyed simply astonishes me, something of that scale I haven't read about in other history books. I used to question the existence of God when I used to read what happened on those continents (North and South America).
