We're ethno-religious group, so being a Muslim is central to the Somali identity. You can live your life as you wished, but it shouldn't be misrepresented on the larger Somali community who are Muslims.

If that was the case then you would’ve moved past blaming social ills on the practice of islam. You need to realise that the excuse of “wahabism” has been played out so much that it’s almost granted that those using it have always an agenda. This is especially true when the people in question are either gaal like you or non- practising Muslim.

It’s not assumptions but factual observations from your exchange with @Enter that I use as evidence to form those judgments.
There’s a common factor that underlies your arguments behind the practice of hijab, polygamy etc & the negative connotations that you associate them with. It has nothing to do wahabism etc but with your disdain that Islam allows it. Now the problem is that you simply don’t want to be honest about it hence the excuse of wahabism, radical Islam etc.
You see you couldn’t care what strand of Islam Somali people practice as long as it’s against your adopted values & norms you will always have a problem with it.
My reasons for being against wahabism is completely different than yours as I don’t seek to vilify nor attack any of the permissible practices that Islam allows while you on the other hand attack & vilify these practices. So much so that you cite them as causes for our ruin & it’s evident for anyone why you will go to such an extent.
If a discussion is what you want at least be frank and stop this facade that you “only” have issues with wahabism etc.

you can just say that Islam has a huge influence and or is a major religion. But it isn’t a part of our sole identity as a whole. Islam only got a major influence on us because off the civil war, and it wasn’t even in the early 90s, people switched from sect and started to implant Islam in their own way since the 2000s.
notice that middle Easterns don’t apply these rules to themselves despite the fact that all 3 Abrahamic religions originated from there, their ethnicity, nationality and tongue isn’t exclusive to their own main religions. I repeat we're ethno-religious people. Islam has been ingrained in us for 12th centuries, and we're the only people in Africa who did jihad in each of those 12 centuries. Islam has dug deep within the Somali society that there is no Somali identity without Islam. We would've been no different than the Rendille or Borana had we not embraced Islam.
Understand how the word "Gaal" came to being before you discuss this topic. We pushed out non-Muslims from our land, some of them were Somalis who happened to be non-Muslims.
I can't believe people want to only associate Islam in Somalia in the 1990s. Just check with your family trees. We once had a Somali Muslim empire that controlled all the way to the Maldives. We didn't fight the Portuguese in the Middle Ages so diaspora kids can re-write our identity. You take Islam out of the Somali identity, and there is nothing left of it. Kids, please read our history and how we hold onto our lands while we remove the non-Muslims before all of a sudden you invent a different identity for us.

Islam was introduced either in the late 600s or early 710s, I’m leaning more on the late 600s. This means by this time Somalia wasn’t majorly Islamic. Only a small part of the north practiced if.
by the 14th century Somalia became majorly Islamic, so you know what majorly means? It means that not all, but more then half off the population were Islamic by the time and the numbers just kept growing century by century.
but what I said was a fact, Islam doesn’t even make up 9% of our existence on this earth. The Israelites mainly based their whole existence on Judaism, their culture, their language and their roots, because their ancestors invented the religion, hence why they heavily identify with it.
you can’t compare us to the Jews because Islam didn’t came from us, our language isn’t based on Islam, nor is our roots and culture. Islam has (wether you like it or not) roots in Arabia and it has always had it and will always be a Middle Eastern religion, not a Somali one.
So we can’t be an ethno-religious group if our culture, tongue, history and roots isn’t based on Islam. You have to speak Arabic & denounce your language, denounce your roots, forget about your history to even be considered that. We aren’t an Arabic nation, we are Somalis.
