Speaking in a language that is not Arabic doesn't have any bearings on why Islam is part of our identity. There are Arab Christians, so speaking Arabic language doesn't define who is a Muslim and who is not.

However, looking at the Somali people's history, its integral parts have been two main things: 1) Speaking the same language; 2) Being Muslims. You take Islam out, there is nothing left.

The struggle of the Somali people in the last 12 centuries speak for itself. And there is no way that diaspora kids who embrace in liberalism or gaalnimo will change it.

True and true. Even after colonization Arabic schools were there. A lot of my older family speak both italian and Arabic. It's just Siad Barre decided to make the somali language written in Latin base format.

But most who had at least had a primary school education during the Italian or British rule could speak Arabic to some level.

Plus those who went to religious schools regularly were taught the Arabic language.

Two of Somalia’s largest newspapers during the early Kacaan years were Arabic-language. Najmatul Oktoobar and Al-dalee’a.

That should tell you how popular the language was not that long ago.

Please go & educate yourself as what you’re arguing for simply is beyond ridiculous. The term ethno-religious implies shared ancestry & religion & it’s a factual description of us as somalis even if we take islam out of the equation.

You argue otherwise based on distant past history but it still doesn’t help you at all.

Even if we consider our ancient history prior to Islam we would still be an ethno-religious group as we still shared a similar religion . What then ? Remnants of that religion is still adhered to by other groups in the horn eg some oromos.

So appealing to our ancient history to negate our ethno-religious status isn’t going to help you at all. Nor will it have any benefit in arguing against our Islamic identity.
