Is that an excuse though? Why can't you let both Somali and Afar be the official languages. And if y'all want to keep French and Arabic, keep them as working languages. Or keep them as they are, and make it 4 official languages. Even Ethiopia, despite our history with them has Somali as one of 5 official languages. Afars who make up 1m-ish of 115m, have their language as an official language too (despite not being among the top 5 most spoken).

As far as I understand, Somali isn't even taught at school too, or French is the main language (?) Even in Ethiopia do we use solely Somali up until high school. Djiboutians, y'all need to step up.

We voted to join Somalia after we got independence in 1977 but the french rigged the elections and brought in tons of Afar people to vote independence so they can continue using Djibouti.

If you go to any ciise in Djibouti they will tell you they are somali first and we would happily join Somalia once it becomes stable again

Nah, Somalis are already majority there. We just need a Djiboutian president who doesn't see Somalia as a threat, but two allied countries, looking out for each other interest. Or "twin states", just like Turkey and Azerbaijan. That how our relations are best preserved.

Somali and afar are our national languages.
Official language are those used for government which if French cause of the whole tribal issues.
The only reason Ethiopia has lots of official languages is because each region uses their own language for government

Lol, I better start defending you. Significant part of my relatives are from Dire Dawa and lots of us got ties with Djibouti through family members, or people living back and forth. Just wanted to add som pressure there. kkkk



On another note, I agree but at least in schools let Somalis use Somali and Afars use Afar. Kenyan Somalis has until 3rd grade where Somali is the main language (I believe) and in Ethiopia until high school, before English becomes the main language of instruction. Djibouti should follow suit. And keep French as the gov't language.

I have to be honest, I've seen many younger Djiboutian sound like they are from diaspora. Their language skills has deteriorated, but the older generation speak like Somalis from anywhere else. Hopefully, the next president makes changes, that benefits both Somalis and Afars.

I'm not so up to date with Djibouti, how will other Somalis & Afars tolerate it? Didn't Afars fight the state in 90s? I've also heard that IOG's wife/in-law are powerful who belong to another clan and ethnicity.

I didn't know that the Djibouti "establishment" was behind the stalemate of the country. May that country be free of the shackles, holding it back.
