Shabaab last time went 150km deep into Ethiopia.

Looks like they will attack at Aato to keep Ethiopia busy over there then enter through the rest of the border

It’s a porous border.

About 500 al-Shabab fighters, including many who originally came from Ethiopia’s Somali and Oromia regions, entered Ethiopia last Wednesday, multiple security and former al-Shabab operatives told VOA Somali’s “The Investigative Dossier” program. The incursion is the militant group’s biggest-ever operation inside Ethiopia.

Mohamed Abdi Tall, the governor of Bakool, the Somali region from where al-Shabab launched the attack, said the militants who entered Ethiopia did not participate in the Yeed, Aato and Washaaqo attacks.

“There were two groups – a group fighting at the border, and a second unit that went through,” he said. “They passed through Aato road while the fighting was taking place; they are headed for Bale region,” between Ethiopia’s Somalia and Oromia states.

there are foreign hands behind this failed invasion. Al-Shabab doesn’t have the capabilities to continue waging these offensives, there are outsiders giving them support to make sure it happens. Some people are saying the western nations are propping Shabab to force the Abiy Ahmed government to negotiate with tplf.

@bidenkulaha there are still a few terrorists trapped inside the region with no knowledge of the land. Hundreds of them have been captured by the shacab and 30 or more are left out there in the wilderness. Al Qushaash is trying to give breathing space for their fighters to survive. The borders are being patrolled 24/7

Interesting , so Somalis occupied by Ethiopia and oromos are actually fighting for alshabab?

I wonder if Alshabab could get a foothold in Ethiopia. It would be a lot more difficult compared to Somalia with its non existent government.

Does alshabab see Ethiopia as more fertile compared to regions in Puntland and Somaliland?

Or maybe they are pushing for an Ethiopia invasion so as to gain more sympathy from local Somalis and Somalis in Galbeed.

Or maybe they are being paid by external actors like egypt via gulf states?

Regardless I believe their is a hidden aspect to this. It seems ridiculous to attack neighbouring nations when you don't even control Somalia.

There’s probably external factors at play. Eritrea is not happy with TPLF+Abiy talks. Then there’s Egypt. Also they might want to have another base outside Somalia with the US return and FGS operations gathering heat. Somalia is a flat land and it’s becoming increasingly hard for Shabaab to control any major cities. They’d have more success in Ethiopia if they could set up a base there because of the ethnic conflicts and mountainous regions. Bale region has 1 million population for example. If they could start taxing Ethiopians they would be a lot more cash rich.

Shocking news. If this continues Gedo and Bay is going to fall as Ethiopia will pull its troops to defend the Shabaab invasion into Oromia.

VOA had an interesting article on the situation. Alshabab is persistent, to survive for 15 years with everyone agreeing to annihilate you means you either adapt or die.

FGS is not a centralised system and constantly changes leaders. It's also woefully corrupt and infights constantly I doubt it's capable of the herculean task of eliminating alshabab.

I have been researching Alshabab and it seems they are embedded within the urban centres across the country. Their actions mimic a virus, they generally start off by courting local sheikhs and marginalised peoples, generate sleeper cells /intelligence systems and finally they either use a region as a logistical hub or begin attacking the locals against them.

Liyu police has little to no funding and are not trained as a military. Ethiopia will need to send its military to the region to cut the problem at the bud. However with the Tigray conflict and OLA I don't expect they will have much troops to spare.
