Somalia's cabinet on Sunday voted to fire the police and intelligence chiefs in response to a recommendation by Somalia's security minister Mohamed Abukar Islow after two serious extremist attacks in the capital this month.

Islow said in a statement that five people have been arrested in connection with the massive bomb on October 14 which killed over 350 people.

Somalia's government has fired the country's police and intelligence chiefs in the wake of Saturday's deadly extremist attack which killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 30 others.

A statement from the Prime Minister's office issued Sunday said police chief Abdullahi Mohamed Ali and Gen. Abdihakim Said were sacked after the cabinet voted to drop both officials.

The firings came after Somali security forces ended a night-long siege at a Mogadishu hotel by five extremist attackers who stormed the building after a suicide car bomber detonated an explosives-laden vehicle at the entrance gate on Saturday afternoon. The attack killed 23 people.

Troops regained control of the Nasa-Hablod hotel on Sunday morning, having killed three attackers and captured two alive, said Capt. Mohamed Hussein.

Al-Shabab, Africa's deadliest Islamic extremist group, quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Saturday's attack came two weeks after more than 350 people were killed in a massive truck bombing on a busy Mogadishu street in Somalia's worst-ever attack.

We don't need more checkpoints or new chiefs.

We need to keep everyone in the security sector accountable.

Those that let them through checkpoints should get fired and investigated.

The security minister should commit seppuku if he fails to keep large trucks filled with explosions out of Xamar.

Getting rid of middle management isn't going to change things on the ground or the overall strategy.

It’s the soldiers. For example the soldiers get paid 150 dollars a month, they dont get paid every month, they have families to feed. Do you think those soldiers would say no to a 1000 dollars bribe by Al-Shabab? No, that is more than they make in a year.

If security is number one make the soldiers salaries number in the government workers salaries.

None of these fools understand security, I trust everyone that has posted thus far in this topic more then those that have been appointed.

As much as I despise Fiqi, when he ran the security under Sheikh Shariif's presidency (a time when shabab officially held several neighbourhoods in Xamar) he did the best job out of a terrible bunch.

There is a lengthy interview he gave during HSM era when he criticised the security while sharing how they managed to foil so many attacks in a much worse situation when he was the head of security.

He realised much of these mercenary youth's are in it for the money and the government began to pay them equal salary with large bonuses for tip offs, this lead to a lot of cells being busted, the top guys or the very few ideologically driven once were executed, those in it for the money were secretly released and paid a salary to become informants.

Double agents were planted among security personnel at check points, double agents pretending to be shabab were then used to try and bribe the leadership of the security checkpoint to let explosives through, the double agents planted in the midst of them would monitor the level of collusion and many were arrested as a result.

Those arrested would only be released if they could incriminate a far bigger fish, this lead to several high ranking shabab operatives that were ideologically driven to be arrested and killed, entire neighbourhoods began to fall to the government.

An atmosphere of mistrust was created between shabab as well as those who would aid them for monetary reasons, this is a very simple counterintelligence techniques to flush people out and create widespread paranoia.

Car repair shops were regularly called up by those pretending to be al-shabab, whoever agreed would be arrested with their businesses taken over, this made all the businesses paranoid because there is no way to know if it's a genuine shabab request or not.

Tarzan then used clan militia's as security to guard their own neighbourhoods which what happens all over Somalia, these militia's would answer to the tribal elders in that district, it was impossible for shabab to infiltrate, no mercenary would risk attacking his own clan, these militia's and tribal elders knew everyone.

This system was destroyed by HSM who used his own appointed security moron's that were easy to bribe, Farmaajo did even worse and removed private security all together while not replacing them with anyone to fill those roles relying on doubling the number of check points which has caused a lot of grief in the capital.

It's no surprise to see the deterioration of security through these buffoonish policies.

I never understood why they cant guarantee these soldiers their 100 bucks every month. Id pay them first before anyone including the useless MPs or even the president himself.. As for the soldiers, "feeding their families" doesn't excuse them letting killers through knowing they will blow up innocent folks up. They are better off resigning and look for other ways to support the family rather then accepting xaraam blood money.

majority of xamar population is pro-kabab. even if CIA/FBI were in change of somalia intelligence/security, there would be bombings.

yield to al-kababs demands (by kicking out all foreign amisom soldiers) first, then include al-kabab in the govt.

btw, i aint an al-kabab supporter nor a sympathizer.

If someone is prepared to let mass murderers in for a thousand bucks then they should be convicted along with the dead bombers for murder.

No sane person would happily accept money from Al Shabaab without already being part of them or whatever intelligence agency placed them there.

It's probably a lot more sinister than just a corruption problem.

Maybe their families are held hostage by Shabaab?

Just remove them from the job and change the strategy to prevent Shabaab from using the same method again and again.
