Being a Somali diaspora in Australia

Pro

1) we are much more quiet on the internet.

2) less likely to find Somalis who lose their culture to African American culture or arab culture (although you will find this in smaller %)

3) more politically correct. You don’t hear or see somali Australians say outrageous, controversial statements in public.

4) we don’t go online and make videos about qabil

Cons

1) antisocial to an extent (barely see somali girls and boys interacting).

2) not a very large community therefore more community gossip (oops)

3) less interaction with other western Somalis (ie. European/American/Canadian diaspora.

Note:

These are to an extent largely generalising. We do have a group (albeit smaller size) of Somalis who have the exact same degenerate behaviour of western Somalis involved in gang culture and other behaviour. However we are altogether a quieter diaspora and more obviously, a lot more boring. 😒

From the most northern diaspora (Finland), I envy your climate :mjcry: your parents made the right decision to move there

How many Somalis in Australia roughly?

Easily 50K, Melbourne is at least 30K.

Somalis here either don’t take part in census or many were born in other countries aside from Somalia (Aus, UK, Kenya, Ethiopia) which decreases our census numbers.

Somalis live in one of the coldest cities in Australia, Melbourne.

I know Somalis that live in Canberra which regularly sees below zero temperatures in winter. But the community there are probably the most educated of Somali-Australians as nearly all of them work in government.

This is cap, the Somali community here are almost integrated with the Arabs or will be in the next few decades.

The Arabs and Somalis probably have a better relationship in Aus than any other country we reside in.

Wow 30k in just one city, that's a lot

The numbers may be smaller now that Somalis have become more integrated and decided to move to other cities.

The Somali suburbs in Melbourne are also dying as gentrification occurs. Instead of buying houses in the inner cities they resided in, Somalis are opting to move to suburbs in Northern or Western Melbourne.

Suburbs like Flemington, Footscray, Thornbury, Northcote, Fitzory, Brunswick, North Melbourne are experiencing “Somali flight”.

I assume the same will happen in the UK and US in the next few decades but on a larger scale.

I might move there after i graduate, which city do you guys recommend? Include cost of living, somali community, clout, and amenities as factors

I wrote Somalis don’t lose their culture to arabs.Just because we have a good friendship doesn’t equate we adhere to arab culture.

Furthermore, Somalis in Australia generally don’t go around calling themselves “mixed with arabs” or make YT videos on it. Of course Somalis don’t do say these sort of things often, but online when I do see it, it’s not generally Somalis from Australia.

Idk I usually prefer cities with a large somali population so I would personally go for Melbourne. I think Perth has a lower cost of living however maybe double check with @Periplus
