It’s genuinely amusing how upset some of you get when I simply point out facts , like the reality of gang-style begging in Addis Ababa. That observation alone has led you to spiral into fantasies in retaliation.

Watch this video, this is the most glaring thing that shows the dissonance and disconnect between the vanity project called Bole road and actual development . He says it looks organized , clean and developed but he is immediately hit with the opposite reality when there is a kid begging him for money and another begging him for food.

The theft and widespread pick pocketing he talks about in the beginning is linked to this desperation.

Somalis don’t beg strangers in Somalia or abroad because they have an extended safety net, family, community, and social bonds. That’s why Somali homelessness is rare in the diaspora. And when it does happen, it’s often due to someone being disconnected from their family, and even then, random Somalis will step in to help.


Even in places like Eastleigh, the majority of beggars aren’t Somali. They gather in Somali areas because Somalis are known to be more generous toward them than their own communities.

These kids will never know what it is like to stay outside and sweat all day. These teenyboppers will never know what it is like to guess where your friends are hanging out, cycling through the usual spots when you find out they are not at home, and you can't call them because you have no phone (pre-smartphone days). And you only had to do that because you were denied the chance since the man of the house said you had to do some type of activity with him, fixing cars or some errand and only let you out an hour after.

Games were even sweeter. You played for less hours, but when you played for max 2 hours a day, it was amazing. Especially when you had friends over or just played with your sibling. Or when we used to sleep over a family friend's house and play all night, jumping the trampoline, doing flips.

We made friends, talked to people. In my town, everybody knew my name too early, to be honest. Kids I never met from other schools were hollering my name on sight which would make me uncomfortable since I was a part-time G, and on some, don't talk to me unless you know me, son, energy, but let me grace you with an undervalued greeting since you're eager. My reputation preceded me. It had to be that I was strong, cool, and handsome. Or maybe because I was a solid dude. It is what it is.

I can talk all day, and these E-kids that are wired to ChatGPT will never know. The thing of sitting in a bus stop and striking up a chat with the person next to you since no one had a smartphone.

Where you had to develop good social skills, the gift of gab, charisma to get around and have a life. It was all so automatic, but it was skills we grew. These days kids struggle with these things and it is because of how that old fabric is gone.
