I didn't phrase myself correctly. I agree with you completely. I cannot imagine wearing a Kemis unless I was at a wedding. Matcha for example is Chinese but it is marketed as Japanese. Many companies source from Japan as it is seem as more authentic so Japan is making money from this.

It’s not flattering when some of the people posting their baati parties/nights don’t credit Somalis and their comment sections are full of ajanabis saying it’s not Somali clothing & insulting us when we say it is. Me disagreeing with that isn’t arrogance. Whether it’s baatis or diracs, non-Somalis who wear our clothes will literally copy us (Somali girls were the first to start this baati party/night trend) but then refuse to give us credit and imply it’s an “east african thing”. When we do something positive = east african. When we do something negative = somali

That is because ultimately us somalis are not manufacturing the clothes, ajnabis are. Its easy to not know or ignore the somali origin when you can buy a dirac online from a foreigner.

I understand the frustration that comes with seeing non-somalis claiming our clothes as their own or attributing it to someone else but this anger imo is misplaced.

Reviving somali clothing manufacturing would stop these people but unfortunately we are probably 20+ years away from it🥲

They should at least call it somali baati just like how people have persian rugs or mexican hot chocolate.

Not even sure why ppl are discrediting it. Good search baati and it’s association with Somalia and diraac come up

I think its strange but I also couldn't care less about some cringe collage students dressing up in Somali cultural clothes as long as its not mocking.

In the end of the day its best to ignore these things rather than to blow it up, too many ajanabi have realized how somalis react to the most minor things as long as there's anything remotely Somali involved, like we’re attention attention-starved community.
