The British kept the peace between the tribes of Somaliland, established order, encouraged trade, prevented raidings and intertribal warfare, which are all admirable deeds. I’m not saying the British were amazing or anything, the truth is that they were extremely brutal in places such as India where tens of millions were starved in famines. The official British policy in all her colonies was to not sell firearms to the natives. The Abyssinians on the other hand imported firearms from the French who didn’t care. The result was that the Somalis in Galbeed we’re unable to obtain a sufficient amount of firearms to defend themselves, whilst the Abyssinians were stockpiling for over 15 years, and they colonised Galbeed.

In Kenya, they gave a referendum to NFD and the Somalis overwhelmingly voted to join Somalia. But the Kenyans threatened the British and ultimately, the argument turned into one of morality vs interests which the former always loses.

Those who fought for the freedom of all Somalis against the British imperial machine were rewarded in this life with honor, and to those who lost their lives fi sabiililaah, the highest rank of paradise amongst the prophets and messengers.

I used to have the same views as you, but after research I’ve concluded that the Mad Mullah was nothing more than a lunatic who went insane after surgery. Reading how he killed all the women and children in Las Qorey after capturing its fort, burning 43 villages on the way to Berbera, taking the wives of all the tribes who didn’t join him, looting everybody who didn’t join him(even if they didn’t join the British), 1/3rd of Somaliland’s population died during those 20 years, killing his own wife and nephew, denounced from his own mentor Muhammad Saleh from Mecca, killing the famous scholar Uways al-Barawi. The list is endless. The guy used to castrate anybody who deserted, kill their families, he even abandoned his own children and wives after Taleh fort was destroyed.

The insane lunatic even had horses trample over the dead corpse of the chief of Muhammad Zubeyr after taking all of their livestock, he killed the chief of Dhulbahante and took the entire livestock of some sections in Reer Hawd. He was only after his own personal ambitions.
