New evidence suggests Africa’s birth rates are falling fast

At conferences and in cabinet meetings across the continent, politicians and policymakers fret about how to educate, employ, house and feed a population that the UN expects to grow at breakneck speed from around 1.2bn people now, to 3.4bn people by 2100. In southern Europe, populists stoke up fears that hundreds of millions of Africans may try to cross the Mediterranean to escape poverty, war or hunger. Across the rich world, environmentalists fear the impact on the climate and planet of an extra 2bn people. Yet few have noticed a wealth of new data that suggest that Africa’s birth rate is falling far more quickly than expected. The UN’s population projections are widely seen as the most authoritative. Its latest report, published last year, contained considerably lower estimates for sub-Saharan Africa than those of a decade ago.

When compared with other continents, Africa’s fertility rates of 4.5 children per woman in 2017 seem high. Indeed, it’s the highest in the world. But that figure is low compared with Africa's birthrates of previous decades. It stood at an average of 6.6 children per woman in 1980.

And these rates has been falling across the continent. In the Sahel, for example, the region with the highest fertility rates, the number of children per woman has dropped from 7 to 5.7 since 1980. The most spectacular drop has been in North Africa, where the rate was cut in half in 37 years, from 6 children per woman to 3.

There is an ongoing demographic transition in Southern Africa and the countries of the Indian Ocean, where the current fertility rate is 4 children per woman, and the rate is trending downward.

Women have more agency now and they don't wanna have kids with there new found agency all places that have industrialised and have women fully in the urban workforce giving them financial freedom leads to higher standards and less willingness to want to have kids or that many so worldwide birth rates is dropping.

In South Korea we can see the extremes of this where women have banded together and don't go into relationships with korea men at all to make the birth rate zero because of whatever social issue they have a problem with over there.

I tend to gratitude to radical feminism circles and let me just say that korean women are going through hell with the men

The population size is increasing fast relative to the rest of the world. What you are talking about is the gradual decrease in the rate of increase. There is a thing in "modernity" that shows an inverse correlation between economic growth and birthrate.

Overpopulation is nonsense.

Africas birth rates are falling fast especially in southern and eastern africa just look at how fast Kenya’s and ugandas fell from 2000 till now

"I tend to gratitude"??? What do you mean by that

Yeah it looks like there going through it but it seems to be the same kind of problem also present in Japan however there is no such movement as far as am aware. I remember these issues being popular in Japan way back now no one talks about it anymore

the ethnicity will change with in a certain amount of years because Koreans on both sides are going for ajnabis and like us they are homogenous but that's going to change for them based on there birth rates with other Koreans being out weight by those that mix out theses guys are actually divesting as a nation and it isn't even a joke :dead:

the South Korean women can do what they want, the men should go and get caught up in a tsunami ew

Furthermore, some countries like South Africa have pretty low birthrate for African standards but you will see the domination of high-birthrate countries. You have to factor in the variation. There is a latent effect where very high-birthrate countries will dominate in a few decades and South Africa will become stagnant in that vigor.

The countries with 4 or higher will be representative. We're seeing a continental spatial variation, with demographic variational shifts and changing distribution patterns. Having a uniform reading hides the regional disparities -- the spatial heterogeneity is pretty wide so I think it can be a bit misleading to say shit is going down at a higher rate than expected when some population clusters drag down the whole. No matter, you will see that reconciled in a couple of decades when those other countries are increasingly dwarfed if they don't change their birthrate patterns, which I doubt.
