Indigenous Australians receive a lot of benefits from the government like free education, cheaper housing and preferential treatment for jobs. It's like affirmative action but on steroids. Anyone with a smidgen of Aboriginal DNA will identify as indigenous and take advantage of this when filling out forms and applying for jobs etc.

It is a very complex issue because from 1910 to 1970's Aboriginal children and in particular "half-caste" (mostly born out of rape) children were forcefully removed from their Aboriginal mothers and families and raised as "white people". These Aboriginal people became known as the "Stolen Generation". Forced assimilation policies were enforced because of the Darwinian politics at the time that Aboriginal people were a dying race. They were whitewashed of all traces of their aboriginal culture and heritage. It is the children and grandchildren of these Stolen Generation.
