I feel like mehr should be flexible. feel like if you love the person, you will adjust mehr according to their situation.
Obviously, no-one is going to marry someone with no job and no prospects. However, if the groom is a 28 year old PhD student, he is guaranteed to become financially successful but at this point in time may not have considerable savings. In that sort of case, you bring down the mehr and later in life request something from him to make up the difference.
If the man is an extremely wealthy individual, as in a millionaire, then it is fair to ask for an exorbitant mehr. A 10k mehr is a lot more impactful to someone 100k p.a than 50k is to someone that earns 600k a year.
From each according to their financial ability imo. Marx was right about something.
