Not really. Old English was very distant from Latin. Germanic vs Italic. Almost similar to Cushitic and Semitic in distance.
I'm talking about timescale. I'm willing to bet Cushitic and Semitic separated much earlier than Germanic and italic. If you look at the latter two and compare side by side, you see a lot of close Indo-European similarities. Even a novice can see the connection.
Somali and Arabic are far too different to compare without a lot of experience in linguistics. Heck linguists cant even agree if Omotic is part of Cushitic, a separate Afro-Asiatic group or its own language family completely.
