NEWS UN extends African Union mission in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Somalia—The United Nations Security Council voted Thursday to renew the mandate of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), a peacekeeping force first deployed in the country in 2007.

According to a statement issued by the UK at the United Nations, all UN members unanimously approved to extend the mandate of the mission in the country.

"The UN-authorised African Union mission in #Somalia is working to build Somalia's own capacity for its own peace and development," it said on Twitter.

AMISOM is a peace support operation with nearly 20,000 forces on the ground mainly from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi and Djibouti.

Zambia, Uganda, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Sierra Leone are the six police contributing countries.

AMISOM has been in Somalia backing the Somali federal government and fighting against the al-Shabaab terrorist group since Jan. 19, 2007.

Not unexpected, they state they will be gone when we have a strong enough army but we won't have a strong enough army without weapons. Therefore its a catch 22.

Of course it's going to be extended when you have an opposition that keeps threatening civil war.

They would rather have an occupation force to protect the UN and NGO folks because they don't know when dumb Somalis might start killing each other and them.

I realize people here never been to Somalia lately, don’t talk to real people there etc. AMISOM doesn’t do jack, none of the fighting whatsoever. It’s Somali soldiers who fight and die. AMISOM hangs out in Xalane, protecting the diplomats and gets paid. I can’t blame the diplomats, these Europeans, Asians arm’s ready to trust Somali forces with their life just yet.That’s why they like Farmaajo, he built a army that is not reliant on them so they could just sit back and collect a check.
