Your kids will know fewer English (insert whatever language where you live) words when starting school (increased risk of failing school)

I don't know about this. When I started kindergarten I didn't know a lick of english, just somali because my parents were determined to have me learn our language. I picked it up pretty quickly eventually and my somali is decent still. Plus I didn't flop school

I feel like that's the best approach to take because my younger siblings are struggling with their somali now because they didn't have that. Everyone just spoke whatever we learned at school instead of somali.

It's not the case for every single person. Some foreign kids will just read books and pick up vocabulary that way. But many won't and will be stuck with a disadvantage.
