The reason you should watch sci-fi TV shows is that they often hint at the kinds of threats humanity might face in the future sometimes even predicting the next virus we’ll battle. This past spring, I watched a sci-fi series called The Last of Us. It centered on a type of fungus that infected humans, turning them into flesh eating zombies. The spores were airborne, and simply inhaling them meant you’d be infected. As the infection progressed, the victims would grow grotesque fungal growths from their bodies.
Interestingly, there have been documented cases of rabies where unusual tentacle like growths appear on the body and move independently. It makes me wonder could a zombie like outbreak actually happen one day? And if it did, would you be prepared?
