I'm not justifying it, but they did not kill them because they were Somali. This was during the civil war and there was a blockade on Yemen at the time. The helicopter stopped firing once they realized it was civilians. They probably thought they were smuggling weapons in. Still a stupid move, but it was not out of racism.

Two Yemenis were killed in Bosaso, I think in 2019, and this caused an uproar in Yemeni social media at that time.
I had a Yemeni friend when I was in the country who told me .cases of racism he was exposed to and that when people see him on the street they call him yaa Houthi.

Yes, Yemenis, esp. of Southern Yemen, particularly those of Al Mahrah province, and Cadan (Aden) and its environs, are culturally the closes to the Somalis, and there is no beef between the peoples. Sadly, of late, both nations have been gone through tumultuous times, and Insha'Allah things shall get better. Besides the Yemenis, Syrians, and Turks, who are considered Muslim brethrens in ardu Somal, I have seen, and interacted with blonde, pale Muslim kids from Albania and Kosovo, speaking fluent Somali, who are received, and treated rather well.
