It may be true, pastoralists are often more patriachal (exceptions like the Tuaregs exists). I think these matrilineal societies amongst Niger-Congo folk weren't there to begin with, it develops later as they ventured in the tropical due to a lack of threat and competions around them so hardcore patriarchy wasn't needed(only surrounded by hunter gatherers). If you look at the uniparental lineages, maternal haplogroups are way more diverse than paternals largely dominated to only one lineage(E1b1a) and two or three at most with substantial frequency(B, EM-132) which indicates that their original ancestors were patriarchal and patrilineal
