It really doesn't matter what she actually tried to do, what matters is what's she's currently known for. Xawo Tako is meant to represent a strong nationalist that women can be proud of, which is why she has a statue. Similarly to how Araweelo is fictional, yet is a figure young girls can look up to. The truth is what people believe, there's no need to dig it up.
