Somali sheikhs, who taught that FGM was haram. Before that, we were ignorant and Somali men love their wives and thought they would be looking out for their daughters best interests which isn’t true anymore. Young men didn’t like it because they realised that intimacy isn’t as good.

No, we've been muslim for a thousand years. We had scholars ect, yet for some reason they never ever used to talk about it. But FGM only become a talking point during the 90s when Western Somalis started to shed light on it.
FGM historically was for men and only benefited men. Any article, study or even our oral culture makes it clear. Historically an uncircumcised woman was seen as unmarriiage and a ****. The men would refuse to marry her. Its only been in the last 30 years have the men started to change their mind and its mosly the deeply religious and the younger generations.
There is a youtuber back home or asks the men back home what their opinion of FGM is. The older, traditional ones basically agreed and thought it was shameful that girls don't get it done, whilst the young men were mostly against it.
