Why won’t African Americans drop the use of the word

It had been used for 400 years by White Slave Master to negatively refer to Blacks. The fact that african Americans continue using it whilst not allowing those of non-black decent to use it is surprising.

Why is this word still used?

Why not just drop the word but whatever.
