UK Somalis aren't as patriotic as Somalis in North America for some reason. We aren't a united community here sadly. I think is because we mostly live in London and don't have our own enclave. We are spread out and don't have a large number as people assume we are.

Entire parks are shutdown in Toronto Minneapolis shuts down lake street London which has higher Somali population then both those cities should do something major tbh
We still have school in July in the uk :cosbyhmm: Somalis are very spread out here and there isn’t much space :dead:

I hate even bringing this up since i dont like how people critcize them. But Is it possibly the salafi influence? I've been seeing a lot of rearted arguments online saying we shouldn't Celebrate independence day we have eid and that its bidah

I seriously doubt it salafi influence is big but it seems like a logistical issue not many venues big enough to hold the event

The whole celebration of 1st of July should change. Instead of copying how other nations celebrate, that day should be a reminder where we celebrate our heritage. Its just a celebration now, it needs to mean something deeper. It should be a day where somalis come together and do good.

I would make a big cultural event with stands that would highlight different aspects of somali culture. A cultural expo for western somalis. Gabay perfomances and

There should also be a big charity tied to it. I would do a big football tournament before the day and the winners would face in the final. All the tickets sales and other fundraisers would go to charity.

pakistanis go crazy on their independence day i don’t think it’s salafi influence

It's the culture. No demographic really celebrates independence day like that here.

I'd love to see a holiday or celebration in Somalia. Maybe an interesting yet specific celebratory event. Non religious events and holidays would be good for us all. I don't know what Somalis usually do.
