Are we sure she isn't Indian xD It's their culture, my mother knows 3-4 languages and reads in 3, never heard any Somali women under 50 not knowing how to read.

Its crazy how different people can learn languages, to me reading is basically the skill to know a language. But others can learn a secondary language completely illiterately

That's how we all start, funny enough kids without any adult intervention will invent a language if not taught one and it will have structure (grammar and syntax), vocabulary (lexicon), sound system (phonology), and ability to convey meaning (semantics).
which somali women went to school 30-40 years ago, it was a rarity. Most of the time families sent their boys to get educated and didn’t see point of educating girls since she would only get married anyway.

Why do you assume her mother is under 50. Are we denying most don’t speak English and can’t understand letters through the post in their host nation.

I’m actually from north my mothers grew up in the 70s her brother was educated to a really high level and she was not, nobody could be bothered
Stop putting down others experience and generalizing think with logic something that clearly isn’t common with you.
It honestly wouldnt surprise me if there were some girls who didnt receive an education because their family didnt see a point in it. But implying this was a common experience or attributing it to culture seems like a stretch, unless ur cadcad
it is culture though back in those days they married them off quickly like at 15-18, yes the ones that were wealthy got an education who lived in the city but most common folk didn’t educate their girls due to ignorance or culture.
My mother was born in the 70's and was from SR, She was educated, not everyone is going to fit in the same profile; this depended on whether you were rural or urban.
