Why is Eritrea such a shit hole??

I don't understand....they could've been such a successful country. What is going on there? They're gaalo so the West will support and trade with them, they're united and not divided like the Somalis, they got their independence from Ethiopia, they have a long coast on the red sea. Why is the country such a shit hole?

Somalia is much worse than Eritrea. In 40 years maybe Mogadishu can look like Asmara if warlords like Muse Suudi Yalxow and Cumar finish are thrown out.
Walaal, there's really no comparison even despite Somalia's problems:

Xamar has serious safety issues Asmara does not but Asmara looks like a tuulo in comparison.

I don't know much about the country but their church looks really nice

Your fucking delusional if you think Mogadishu looks better. Xamar is a glorified slum

Why the insults? Pretty odd considering I spoke to you fairly respectfully. But anyway, the footage you shared I agree makes Xamar look worse for wear but it is a far, far larger city with more business, outside brands, modern high-rises, a larger population and so on. Yes, it's more poorly managed but again, Asmara comes off as a quiet tuulo in comparison.

Sorry for that but it's factual. I've been to Mogadishu and it's most of the houses are tin and slums wallahi it's an abomination we need to be aware about how trash our capital looks so that we can invest more in it. Sometimes you can't even drive on the main roads because there is no drainage.

Isn't Eritrea under western sanctions or was for decades? I gotta be real, it's been a bit of blindspot for me in terms of contemporary history. I largely ignore it compared to Somalia, Ethiopia and Djibouti and should get on that but I generally got the impression that it's basically Horn African North Korea without the nukes. Dictator, not friendly with much of the west, restricted trade. They're basically crippled.

Eritrea is ruled by a former child soldier. Eritreans undergo more atrocious treatments now than during Selassie era but somehow diaspora Eritreans are still proud of their country

Military service is mandatory for both gender in Eritrea and can last for decades

You have bought into Western propaganda against Eritrea. That country has achieved food self-sufficiency, free education, and free healthcare for all Eritrean citizens. Find me one African nation that has achieved that?

This is Eritrea creating man-made lakes and dams.

They also have one of the largest armies in Africa in order to keep Ethiopia at bay.

Because the west is trying to control it like Somalia and Isaias said no. They now sanctioned them like crazy. They only fund rebels which whom he has repulsed and annihilated due to brute and grotesque techniques.

Are they truly, though? I knew a diasporan Eritrean in Sweden and it seemed like he was against the regime and disliked Afwerki quite plainly but was just proud of his heritage and culture otherwise. Gave me the impression that this was the norm.
