We all know that divorce rates are increasing around the globe but what exactly is making that happen. A pattern I’ve noticed is that countries that are a part of the OECD have decreased rates of marriage and increased rates of divorce. So less people are getting married and those that marry have a higher chance of getting a divorce. But the real question is why is it increasing? Here are some suggestions I’d like to make(and you can add to them):
1) Laws that make it easier to get a divorce: For example, something like a child maintenance support or spousal maintenance is paid legally to support the wife or husband. Historically speaking we know divorce was hard to legally obtain in many cultures and that has changed.
2) Changing cultural attitudes and movements: imagine getting divorced or breaking up a marriage a couple of decades ago or even for some, years ago. Another thing I’d like to note is the boom in Feminism and female rights. Whatever you think of feminism, be it good or bad, it has drastically changed the role of women and where they believe they stand in society. I am 100% sure that conflict comes from the confusion of what the role of a man is or what the role of a woman is. It was simple before and now it’s being re-defined(again, whether this is good or bad is how you see it). There’s even a survey that says women are more likely to initiate a divorce.
Okay so laws aren’t as tight and restrictive as they used to be, people are starting to accept divorce, the role of women is changing, now what?well—->
3) Our view of marriage and love has changed: first of all, what we are exposed to or the kinds of people we are exposed to influence us. So Hollywood romanticising the so called ‘perfect love’ is somewhat shaping our view of love. It isn’t simple anymore, it’s all this unnecessary bullshit like he went down on his knees to give me a rose and lifted me up(that’s a bit exaggerated but you get what I mean). Have you guys seen those disgusting couples all over social media: “oh my god yass #goals”. We also live in hyper-sexual world, is love becoming another word for sex? When everything is just about sex, everything is limited.
-Another thing I’ve noticed is that people want to be loved but aren’t willing to love, and this kind of links with the rise of individualism in many societies. You getting a divorce or breaking up a marriage would’ve affected the whole tribe, the whole community, the whole societies relations. We don’t care about anything but ourselves now.

I think it’s because of the infinite number of options we have these days. If you’re not happy in your relationship, there’s no need to make it work. There are plenty of fish in the ocean.

Yes, that’s another thing, I think we have the option of marrying someone else. This is kind of bad though, as the idea that you can always find someone better will linger in your mind whenever your spouse makes a small mistake, when in reality that may not be true.

Yep, I feel like that is the problem. People are not satisfied with their relationships and are always looking for better.

People don't marry for love nowadays, it's easy to divorce someone who you've no attachment to.

1. Women aren't dependent on men financially. So if they're in a bad situation, they can just leave.
2. People are way more individualistic in today's times. So the idea of making things work in a marriage is dead and gone.
3. People think that if things aren't perfect in a marriage, that it should be gone. They idealize marriage too much.
4. It's seemingly obsolete. Especially in secular nations, as marriage is a idea formed from religious rites and cultures.
5. In a generation that ended up fine without 2 parents, the idea that it's important is generally dead.
6. Men think it's a raw deal, so why bother.
7. Women think it's a controlling arrangement, so why bother.

God times are depressing as fk.

Interesting analogy, I also think that because it has religious roots, it is being ignored in secular/atheist societies but then again I’m sure people have been marrying before major religions even existed
