There was an entire period where there was no government in half the country, just warlords. Somaliland becoming independent has nothing to do with Somalia. You guys frame your independence case as being in contrast with Somalia's failures, but that's irrelevant. If you get independence it's because there is some value to be had in recognizing you, eg. Ethiopian MOU.

No, this is done on purpose. I've seen many people online for a long time saying they need to stop tourism in areas with dilapidated buildings. The tourists pay extra money to the drivers to take them to these locations. For instance, in Somaliland, you never see tourists riding in cars with armed guards. But in Mogadishu, they do this like they're showing off how tough they are, when in reality it's the opposite. Driving white tourists around in cars with armed guards just makes them think that this country is terrible and will always be terrible.
