If Somaliland would've taken the road that the OP and others have suggested, it sure would've been sabotaged by the same powers who are sabotaging the Somali government that is sitting in Mogadishu. I have the view that Somaliland isolating themselves from the rest of Somalia has really worked to its favor: Its stability is intact because foreign powers who are interfering in Somalia don't see it as a hindrance to their regional goals.

That being said, where Somaliland failed is by developing an efficient taxation system that can be efficient for its development and by fighting corruption at the top, especially how funds are spent by different presidents and their cabinets. Right now, the president can spend the public funds as he sees fit and that needs to change. The ministers also spend the funds allocated to the ministries as they see fit.

Another area that Somaliland is wasting its resources is the never endless recognition quest where they're seeking it through the wrong route. They just need to work hard to get their central bank be allowed to do business with the rest of the world through the Swift system. The Taiwanese central bank is in there, so SL should've explored a similar option.

I think Somaliland should do that for the meantime, we can strengthen ties and do big trading and hopefully turn into Singapore and than annex from Somalia as by than we would be worthy enough for recognition.
