Why does Somaliland take access to Somalia’s market for granted?

There’s one other thing that’s rarely ever mentioned by the secessionists or I’ve seen talked about before that I want to bring up…….

Why do north westerners assume that their “citizens” and businesses will automatically inherit all the rights that they had before? Namely:

1. Freedom of movement & rights to work in 🇸🇴
2. Access to Somalia’s market
3. And all other things you take for granted for being in a union

To say Somaliland’s economy would collapse without access to Somalia’s market is an understatement. Somali politicians/leaders havent even begun to apply pressure (which I agree with as there’s no urgency right now). North westerners have no clue at all how they’d fare with a India-Pakistan type of border where trade and movement is almost non existent.

All of the biggest companies up north make most their money from the rest of Somalia, and there is nothing they produce that Somalia doesn’t already have (be it telecom etc). if Dahabshiil was given an ultimatum “cease all activity in Somaliland or you will be banished from Somalia”…..they’d have to abandon Somaliland if they were to survive.

It seems almost that they think everything will stay exactly the same, enjoy all the benefits of a union, except get a seat at the UN? At some point someone needs to sit their ass down and give them a hard talk.

Discuss.

I was curious about this and searched up Abdirashid Duale (CEO of Dahabshiil). He seems to hold government positions in Somaliland and is presumably a secessionist.

can someone explain to me why this dude and his businesses are allowed to profiteer off the rest of Somalia?!!!

He is literally funnelling profits made in Somalia to fund his clans secessionist movement right under the government’s noses…unbelievable 🤦‍♂️

can you imagine if Jack Ma (ceo of Ali baba) was from Taiwan and held a government position over there and was funnelling profits from mainland China to fund Taiwanese recognition worldwide?

Look at what’s happening to Uk right now due to brexit, total disaster. No fuel, empty shelves everywhere etc

they have lost all the benefits of a union with EU and now they are begging them to comeback.

this will be 100000x worse for Somaliland. And they need to made well aware.

He has nothing to do with the government in Somaliland he is a somali business man like everybody else and is well respected by everybody.

He has many activates in Somalia and Somaliland, and also the tallest building in any somali state.

Business and politics are to different things, even Taiwan, that is centuries ahead of Somalia, and China that is soon to be the next super power have a large and substantial trade, where Taiwan's biggest trading partner is China.

You have to understand how these kinds of dynamics works..

He is a politician in Somaliland and currently serves as the "Minister of Public Works and Housing of Somaliland". I think I can stop here and disregard the rest of your uninformed post.

edit: i'll bite

"Business and politics are to different things.."

This is patently false, in every sense of the word.

China is by far the worlds leading example of nations that mix the two. Just look what they are doing to australia, they've banned australian wine, lobsters, timber etc etc at heavy costs, all simply because Australia asked for a comission to the origins of of Covid. Examples of them mixing business and politics are plenty, that is China 101.

Taiwan is a special case as its an island on its own, and more importantly, they literally can not survive without Taiwan.............Taiwan is home to a company called TSMC that manufacturers most of the worlds high end chips and they are actually doing their best to hire as much of them to steal their tech.

Always wondered if Hormuud and other Mogadishu based companies are allowed to function there?

I have explained this before but Telesom which is the largest provider in Somaliland is owned by Hormuud, same with Golis in Puntland being owned by Hormuud. Sheikh Ahmed Nuur Jimcaale dominates the Telecom industry throughout Somalia.

He does this by selling shares to locals.

Sheikh Ahmed Nuur Jimcaale the owner of Barakaat Group is the owner of Hormuud, Golis, Telesom, Salaam Bank, Taaj Express, Buruuj Construction, BECO, EVC, Zaad and Daarusalaam city.

Do some more researching then, if you don't want to hear it from me...

i've updated that post.

I'm happy to hear from you but would like to get correct info. You said he has nothing to do with the government, but yet is listed as a government minister.

Admittedly i just believed whats in wiki, if i'm mistaken (and the wiki page is wrong) please correct me.

Also there are many companies that also operate there, like premier bank is a Mogadishu based recent example.

This brother seems confused and don't understand that political disagreements have nothing to do with how somali business operates, cross border. .

It's alright bro, they have the same name so it's understandable that you have confused them.

The minister is Dhulbahante from Buuhoodle and Dahabshiil CEO is HJ - a small sub clan named Sanbuur.

What I'm trying to say is........Somalia gov has options, that they haven't exercised or ever talked about, to play hard if it chooses.

Somalia should not lose 1/3 of its territory to a clan without using EVERY option at its disposal. If a total blockade is necessary than so be it. I'm not saying two countries with political disagreements can't trade, but what I'm saying is Somalia has the option to really bring them back to reality and remind them the benefits Somaliland enjoys remaining in a union.

You would be positioning the relationship. The status quo is fine. And it’s not 1/3rd. We are too underdeveloped to be focusing on hurting SL. We’ve finally got a semblance of a government. Let’s focus on all our states. Unless you are including the whole of Sanaag and Sool. Also the fact we’re so economically linked is a benefit to the Unionist cause. It’s only beneficial to us as a country when people from SL contribute to Xamar’s economy.

Hormuud is the largest tax payer to the FGS. They have a stake in Telesom Somaliland which operates mobile money. Hormuud's goal is to create a cashless society, so the entire economy becomes dependent on their service. It's in their interest that nothing disrupts trade in the region. Because of this undue influence with the FGS, there has been no effort to re-establish the Somali shilling and they will not create conflict with Somaliland.
