Why does religion play such a big role in the lives of so many people?

When you endow sentient life with the intelligence and wisdom to realize that they will die someday and cease to exist forever, at limbo in nowhere for eternity. Is it then surprising that life will find a way to cope with this existential crisis? Nearly every culture has some higher power that is looking out for them, and there is almost always some form of an afterlife. Is this a coincidence, what are your thoughts on this?

No, it just means that every nation had a prophet and they slowly moved away from it over time.

Also fitra is real, every human intrinsically knows theres a God.

The first law of thermodynamics, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed; energy can only be transferred or changed from one form to another.

We will always exist, but in what form that is the question?

Because we have fitrah (innate disposition to believe in Allah and seek to worship him) however it can get lost within humans for many reasons.

Some scientists say the universe will slowly collapse inward and soon, the build up of energy will lead into another big bang, and that this is infinite.

Islam doesn’t deny that the Big bang occurred, however, we will be destroyed earlier due to natural destruction Allah will wilfully put in earth.

Creation was an act of narcissism by.a God who wished to observe itself through a multiplicity. Of course some trace of him will be in every human. Religion must be followed until it has exhausted all its experience and creative capacities. Same with atheism. Same with any -ism, or really anything humans do

Religion puts us at rest, most people will live unremarkable lives with poverty and religion is one way of feeling at peace with that.

Interesting. Certainly, there are many people who experience unfairness and mistreatment in this life, so I can see how someone who has lived an unfortunate life would find solace and peace in religion. The promise of a better life based on merit is very appealing to the human psyche as it give people something to look forward to. It can also encourage people to persevere through the harshness of life.

It makes it so life is not the end, and it encourages a life of living not just for yourself. As you said every ancient civilizations had god or gods it gives life a guidline to have purpose. Whereas without it you would have to find that out yourself.

Religion is the default disposition of the human brain. That's why every culture in the world believed in deities.

It gives people a purpose to life along with surviving, thriving and procreating (passing on genes which is the biological purpose of all life existing).

Who are we to say what Allah will and will not do?

The truth is no one knows what is coming or going to happen.

But there are patterns, events and occurrences in existence that can be studied and found to show a pattern. Just like sun light rises and day arrives followed by night and sunset.

Are you a religious man, if you don’t mind me asking?

Islam is not a feel good drug as you're alluding to.
I have never even mentioned a specific religion. I just framed this interesting question in hopes of spurring a healthy discussion. The question simply wonders if humans are predisposed to believe in religion to function well as sentient life forms.
