There is such a thing as female circumcision in Islam (very small procedure but not required like for men) but that is rare and never gained traction in somalia, the somali custom was pre-islamic.

It was definitely a thing but its a pre-islamic practice and not at the rates whites claim, its very rare but it does happen.

Sorry, walaal, but I've just seen too many types like her being 100% utilized by ajanabis to paint Somalis as savages, barbaric and so on. Believe whatever you wish but 99% of the time that is what this "sharing of her trauma" is going to be used for in the international space; cunsuris painting us in a bad light. Not a single one of these cadaans really cares about her trauma; it's either a liberal circlejerk to feel better about how life is in the west or cunsuris chimping out.

That being said, I have absolutely no issue with her airing her trauma and the stamping out of this, as you say, inhumane practice but, let's be serious and admit that her rambling to a bunch of worthless foreigners (in terms of exacting change in Somaliweyn) is doing nothing along that vein. Nothing at all. She should instead engage in serious activism within the Somali community and leave it at that. That will exact real change for future Somali women.

And on the other NE Africans, you have yet to provide a single source and I have personally never encountered any prolific Egyptian, Sudanese or even Ethiopian examples. Yet their stats are comparable to ours. Again, some rando on Tiktok, even if she had 10 million views, is a joke of an example for you to share.

I'll conclude by saying I do think @novanova is correct and it's the fact that NGOs are so predominant among Somalis ever since the civil war. Crying to westerners about how sad it is to have been refugees or the children of refugees is quite the industry both for women and men.

Okay I understand where you're coming from, it would be ironic for FGM to be used as tool to spread that we are one of the most barbaric savage people when African neighbours also share this practice. I'm quite neutral on this subject because i see two sides, i haven't gone through this process and i feel like it was not my place to tell them they can't speak about it. It all comes down to the people who experience these things and agree that talking about these topics to cadaans have minimal impact, i know how racists are when they clip things and use fgm experiences in comedy stand up shows to mock us but never do it to other countries. could you also explain how NGOs could of influenced somalis to speak up about it more especially being a refugee aswell.

I went to a boys school and still had an assembly on fgm. They showed the country by percentages and Somalia had 99%. Then they put a video of a Somali mom talking about it. Had guys looking at me and asking if my mum had fgm. I was only one of 3 somalis and the other guy started crying and left the room when he saw the video. Guy was just make it worse

Nobody takes their daughters back home to do this. I knew there were the odd 1 or 2, but this is extremely unusual lol.

The average somali diaspora kid have never even heard of this practise until they’re in their teens or so

My friend was taken back a couple years ago which was shocking cuz she was passed puberty and the girls who've had it done to them might continue the practice.i was at work with some fob girls and 1 was talking about how cadaans were weird for not doing fgm she was young and had no kids yet but she still favors it. Ur right about the westernized somalis not doing it as much especially if their parents didnt do it.

Because you don’t have a government. No meaningful reduction will take place back home until we do, it’s a sad reality. It requires massive resources and outreach to rural populations..

All other countries had a significant reduction between 90s until now because of massive campaigns by their respective governments, Somalia was basically under anarchy during that era.

Oh no. I live in America but theyve been cracking down on it. There has been times tht the doctor checks the girls and if they got fgm done the parents would be reported. It happened to this African mom who did it to her daughter
