Why do people in South Central build on floodplains?

If you build your house on the riverbank - which is a natural flood plain - your house is going to flood during the rainy season.

May God give them common sense

May Allah ease their suffering

May they stop building on natural flood plains

May the stop getting "igu sawir" politicians and instead some knowledgable genuine people

A floodplain or flood plain is an area of land adjacent to a stream or river which stretches from the banks of its channel to the base of the enclosing valley walls, and which experiences flooding during periods of high discharge. The floodplain is the natural place for a river to dissipate its energy. Meanders form over the floodplain to slow down the flow of water and when the channel is at capacity the water spills over the floodplain where it is temporarily stored. In terms of flood management the upper part of the floodplain (piedmont zone) is crucial as this is where the flood water control starts. Artificial canalisation of the river here will have a major impact on wider flooding. This is the basis of sustainable flood management.

There were floods in the UK reported this week and bushfires near Sydney in Australia. Peopl still choose to live in these high risk areas because their livelihoods depend on it.

"why would nomadic people build there towns next to riviers?"
why are you victim blaming townfolk for the flooding? as if it never happens in somaliland

may allah cure your arogance

Look, this has nothing to do with Somaliland. It's common sense, if you don't build on floodplains, you don't get mass floods.

Somaliland doesn't have permanent rivers. It has flash floods due to lack of sewage and street drainage, which is also a problem, but it's completely different

Never mind. Continue building along the river banks and think it's a surprise when the houses floods. :damedamn:

Yes but those floods are once every 10 years. Even so only after the umpteen flood defences have been breached.

There are floods almost twice a year in the UK, sometimes a month of rain can pour in 1 day. Yet this is a country that has had a drainage system in place for hundreds of years.

by your logic all dutch people should migrate from nederlands to germany because they live under sea level.:O27GWRK:
it's better to create drainage system to prevent floods rather than moving entire communties away from riviers.

Why are you under the impression all these people are new comers and have decided to build their homes near the river, most of these people have lived there their whole lives same as their great great grandfathers etc.

Made perfect sense for nomads to live near a place of water, big issue today is global warming which has made weather conditions annoyingly unpredictable but go ahead and blame these miskeen victims

Dutch have build dams and dykes. They have sealed an entire sea. They have drained half a sea. Their system of flood defence is called the 8th world wonder.

In the absence of all of those things in South Somalia, they should not build on flood plains

That's fine. Im not saying they should live their. New developments should be moved far from flood prone areas. Far from the banks of the rivers. That would be logical

Total population of beledwayne is 400,000+, I doubt new development is the issue

Best place to build, near reliable water source used for their farms which they rely on.

Why wouldn't they build near the river?
