What usually occurs is a guy meets a girl or vice versa, they both kick it off in an non sexual way, having great conversations, talking on the phone for hours then boom the interested party, drops ''hey do you want to go out on a date sometime?'', the other person responds with ''oh hey, I don't see you in that way, I prefer it for we just became friends'', the person doing ''the friendzoning'' doesn't want to her/his feelings by admitting that they're not attracted to them in a sexual or romantic manner, so just they keep them around because they feel they are fun to hang out with.
Now, the friendzoned person is to blame here, they can accept this ''insulting friendship offer'' or simply move on to date someone else who would love to date them or be in a relationship with them. Most of the times, the friendzoned person decides to stay and hopes ''that this person changes his/her mind'' but this isn't a hollywood movie where the ugly nerd bangs the hot cheerleader, as you will never be a sexual option in their eyes unless something drastic happens like the friendzoned person becomes famous or wins the lottery then maybe this said person will their mind but from the moment you got friendzoned it was already a wrap for you.
So technically you put yourself in the friendzone as you accepted their lame offer of friendship because you were to scare to make a move early or simply took the L, and moved on to something better.
