Why do Muslim countries fear debates?

Is it because they know they will lose in the long run? Why are they scared of free and open societies where all kinds of ideas, good and bad, can be exchanged and debated in the marketplace of ideas? If my ideas suck let the public tell me my ideas suck. Don't censor me.

Fear and intimidation is the only way religion is kept alive.

In Muslim countries nowadays liberal people don't have any kids or only 1 or 2 while the highly conservative Islamists have 6 or more. Contrary to what one might think they are becoming more Islamist by the generation and not modernized.

Turkey is a good example of this, getting more Islamist as the years go by. Erdogan promised the millions of Syrians to get Turkish citizenship, sliding the country ever more in a conservative direction.

Religion bans freedom of expression because it'll challenge them and in order for priests and sheik to continue holding on to their power they must ban and deem debate on certain topics unreligious.

They are becoming more conservative because they censor people, jail or kill liberal bloggers and suppress speech - in an era if the Internet and Youtube.

They know if they allowed liberals and atheists speak their mind many people would lose their religion.

Religion is kept alive by intimidation and threats.

And on top if that they have 5-6 kids and keep the demographics in their favour.

OP I agree. Salafists and extremists exploit this lack of debate to dictate anything and no matter what people will believe them with no questions. This is the main problem with Muslim countries today.

can you name one Muslim country that has gone w/o western interference/manipulation of their governments to have organic debates about really any social issue?

I wish Muslims had such control over their countries.

It's either extreme secularist puppet state

Or

Extreme 'islamic' puppet state.

I'm a Muslim. Some of us are just more reasonable than others. Debate is necessary and healthy and should be encouraged how will we other wise evolve? Most Muslim nations are still stuck in their old ways and that is because culture and religion is so intertwined, clan/tribe elders and sheikhs don't benefit from the change and we can see how it affects the people who unfortunately don't know any better.

As usual generalized and stereotyped thread, as if they know numbers and names of Muslim countries (1,1/6 billion Muslim) but keep on. You need to go and visit these countries before you start judging them. Only 2 countries in world use the Islamic laws Iran and Saudi other that the so called Islamic countries use the western laws.

Debates only exist in Western countries. China isn't an Islamic country, yet there's no debate there either. Or Vietnam which is a single-party communist state.
