Why do Dominicans deny they're black ?

They have a large community in the Northeast where I live , 'most' of them aren't that different from other Latino populations like Puerto Ricans and Cubans , they may have more darker skinned I guess , but majority of them aren't that different.
I used to go to thier barbershops , good people.

they’re mostly doing this out of self hate most of the times; but I would agree the broad labels (Black) does no good either.

is better for them to start finding a way to love themselves and stop Colourism.

Self hate, Colourism and self-loathing is a thing in the Caribbean’s.

They are only 40% African in terms of genetics.

One would find it ridiculous if a person who is only 40% European identified as white (your average Mexican is 40% European), but because of the one drop rule it apparently has become normalized for 40% Africans to larp as full blacks.

I had a Dominican friend in secondary school who used to always say she's latina,not black.

I heard a Dominican break it down like this; they associate black with the african americans, who, with all due respect, don't necessarily have their own language/culture/etc, like dominicans do-they have spanish, they have their own cuisine, etc.
but no doubt- they know they are, at least, partially of african descent-along with european descent and etc.
also-colorism is real in those latino countries, like cuba and the dominican republic.

what do they think of Somalis heard there is a descent somali population in Boston. One thing I noticed out of all the demographics in the world Somalis are least around Hispanics excluding mexicans. They tend to live in southern state east coast and west coast where the Somali population is scarce. There's hardly any in England.

We're not that visible as a community, most people here don't know much about us , everytime someone asks me where I'm from After telling them Somalia I have to also explain to them where Somalia is located lol.
