Why didn't Somaliland take advantage of Somalia's anarchy to get independence?

This is just a question out of curiosity.
Somalia was in complete anarchy from 1991 to 2012. After the TFG was formed Somalia returned to the international scene as a legitimate government but as we know it was very corrupt. In the last years we had presidents willing to sell somali sea to kenya and we had corruption all over the place. Why didn't Somaliland take advantage of this to bribe Somalia's politicians to recognize them? Hassan Sheikh and Sheikh Sharif would have easily agreed to Somaliland's independence if they were given something in exchange, it would have been even easier with pre TFG governments. If Somalia gives up all it's claims on Somaliland the whole world would recognize SL independence within a few months, that's basically the best chance for SL to secure it's full independence/recognition. Now it's a bit harder with Farmaajo as he seems to be very unionist. This really surprises me. Somaliland had over over 25 years (1991-2017ish) as a time window to bribe or convince Somalia to give them full indpendece and they didn't take advantage of that, instead Somaliland refused to talk with Somalia out of hostility and pride.

@Som Somaliland themselves had difficulty in the first few years after seceding in 1991. Somaliland couldn't benefit from us being stable enough to sign off the divorce papers in the same way Eritrea and South Sudan had stable parent states

I get that they also had issues in the beginning but they still could try to take advantage of us in the early 2000s and 2010s

After the Berlin Wall collapsed, many Communist nations disintegrated. The Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, East Germany etc.

The IC declared these nations defunct and essentially allowed for splinter states to form. This was partly due to the IC not wanting a power vacuum.

Somalia was a communist country that collapsed in 1991. The IC could easily have treated us like Yugoslavia and let Somalia splinter.

But it didn’t and let the civil war play out.

Why?

Because the IC prefers a dysfunctional Somalia to a balkanised Somalia.

They have no realistic plans on ever letting Somalia disband.

That is a really bad take on politics and reflects heavily on many Darod political commentators. Watch videos of Hassan Sheikh and Sharif asked about Somaliland, they all said the same thing midnimo waa muqadas. Not "su'aashaas waa adagtahay kama jawaabi karo". Sure they don't lose alot of clan territory like the Dooro in the north but the only President in Somali history to 'concede' Somali territory was none other than Mohamed Siad Barre. Sold off the Ogaden and even NFD to an extent to Arap Moi. It is more probable that Farmaajo would sell out his kinsmen in exchange for votes and you N&N sheep would spin and justify that too despite your Faqash Kacaan ideology that believes in a brutal repression on secessionism whereas HSM and Sharif would lose HAG popularist support which is pro Somalia by default even though they are more politically delicate with the Somaliland case.

simply not true they had 25 years.

There was no one legitimately in charge to “bribe” for the majority of that time in the first place.

thirdly, watch & listen carefully to the masterpiece of a speech Abdiweli gave by @Manafesto above. There is simply no single politician who has the legal or moral authority to allow secession of any of its territory. There’s nothing to negotiate about that, no Somali president or politician would ever do that. That would be political suicide.

“Hassan Sheikh and Sheikh Sharif would have easily agreed to Somaliland's independence if they were given something in exchange,”

your analysis is wildly unsubstantiated. That’s all.

Our recognition is not in Somalia mate. Somaliland and Somalia were equal stakeholders of the 1960 union known as the Somali Republic. The Republic of Somaliland can unilaterally declare that it has retracted from the 1960 union and it has every legal basis to do so. Going through Somalia to get recognition delegitimizes our case and makes The Republic of Somaliland seem like a secessionist state, which is something you Somalians try and paint Somaliland as. We're not dumb enough to do things how you see it should be done or else we'd be the same:pachah1:

The international consensus is that Somaliland is a secessionist state.

The term given in nearly every publication is literally "self-declared republic".

Respectfully, what are you smoking????

The Republic of Somaliland is known as a Defacto Country and is the legal successor to the pre union Somaliland( June 26 1960 to July 1st 1960).

Even in the most recent published article on The Republic of Somaliland, the United States Heritage Group mentions that Somaliland is unique and not comparable to seccessitionist states like South Sudan or any in Africa because Somaliland had been an Independent Recognized Country before voluntarily uniting with Somalia

Yes, you are relying on a conservative think tanks opinion during a Democrat-dominated government.

“ the United States Heritage Group mentions that Somaliland is unique”

no one cares that a think tank you funnel money to, says what you want them to say. You need to get more creative.

When you get proven wrong change the point of discussion. Good on you for admitting defeat mate

No, I didn’t admit defeat as the first line of your earlier statement was a blatant falsehood.

How can Somaliland be seen as a successor to the 26th June 1960 SL when the FGS is internationally recognised as the successor of the Somali Republic?

Also the international community did not declare Somalia dissolved as they did with the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, which were other unions that collapsed after 1990.

Your main source is the Heritage foundation.

Why don’t you ask yourself why the Heritage Foundation didn’t push for SL’s recognition last year when nearly every Trump cabinet member was Heritage alumnus?

They had unprecedented influence in the last administration but said nothing about SL?

Why now.

Why enter this discussion when the Heritage Foundation are as far away from the Biden administration as I am.

I’ll leave you to answer that.

Yes, Somaliland funnels money to one of the world's most renowned think tanks and had them say what we want them to say. A thin tank that has has The President of Forbes, Steve forbes on the board of trustees among other huge US Politicians and Bankers:mjlol:
