I find it hilarious how (many) Somalis love it when you call them Arab and would feel complimented, but Turks for example have the opposite attitude. Turks despise it when you call them Arab and look insulted, but tell the Turk they look European and they’ll look like a child on the morning of Eid.

It’s like there exists a hierarchy within the various flavors of self hatred commonly seen in the third world.

Somalis are NOT Arabs and will NEVER be. Arabisation worked through a linguistic change — we do not speak Arabic. It also worked through cultural change — we don’t participate in their culture.

Sure sxb, but don’t generalize like that because it honestly sounds ridiculous.
Funny story: last time I was at my local mosque, which is basically made up of like 50% Somalis and the other 50% Arabs and Southeast Asians, our imam who's Somali was giving us info about the time and location for Eid. But he chose to say it all in Arabic.

Right away a bunch of uncles stood up and were like, “Say it in Somali or even Swedish. (I live in Sweden) We’re not Arabs, we don’t speak Arabic " Our only connection with the Arab world is Islam so dont conflate the two.

My mom’s family at first didn’t support her marrying my dad because he’s Arab. In her family they had never married Arabs before and they didn’t like the idea, she was the first one to do it. Later my grandmother met my dad and apologized to him and things got better. Eventually they accepted their marriage. Also i never seen Somalis identify as Arabs in real life they're always proud to be Somali, that whole “we’re Arab” thing seems to just be online

nobody has ever told a somali they look arab LOL, be serious. We’re a whole different race for gods sakes.

I feel like fobs are obsessed with pushing this weird ’ana arab’ nonsense or pretending like we have high opinions of them. Prior to the blm era I had never heard of arabs and somalis even being brought up in the same conversation.

Sudanis are mixed and they speak arabic, it does make sense for them to identify as arab.

For any somali that identifies as arab (I’ve yet to come across one), I wouldn’t consider them a coon, I’d just see them as deranged clannists

Arab is more of a linguistic/cultural identity lol, therefore any group that speaks arabic as their main language counts as arab.

arab identity is inclusionary, white identity is not. I guarantee u if white americans made ’white’ an inclusive identity, african-americans would claim it
