Why are there French amd American bases in Djibouti

If not to protect the Red Sea or was it really covertly to extend influence in the Horn of African and protect Eritrea and Ethiopia

America has bases over there because it is a strategic location and they need to protect bab el mandeb from terrorists and pirates also Djibouti is where they plan their operations for the middle east. Also Djibouti is the only stable country in the region

US had an intel base in Eritrea until 1977, the base in Djibouti is a naval base but I suspect it’s true purpose is intelligence. Projecting naval power too of course

as for the French, Djibouti is another colonial puppet state to them, the only reason Djibouti exists as a state is because of them. Of course they keep their military presence
