It's what you see looking back at you in the mirror. It's a term used to refer generally to the group of people with recent ancestry from Africa. A people who share multiple physical traits such as the more obvious ones mentioned like skin tone, hair texture, lip size... It's a race. A social construct with a bit of basis in genetics. It's a broad term. It's why you aren't surprised when you find yourself often times being confused with other black Africans because of your appearance.

That's wonderful that you aren't distancing yourself from other Africans. We might even be able to come to a compromise if we referred to the black race as simply African the same way East Asians aren't commonly referred to as yellow but instead just Asian.

Your problem is purely about semantics. Different naming is all you want. Black is no more a derogatory term than is white or red or brown or yellow. It's your pre-held biases that makes you want to distance yourself from the term black. You associate qualities with the term that aren't inherent. Do you have as equal a problem with the term madoow?

Not really no. The difference is 'madoow' is just a general term for people fitting that description. The same way we also have 'indho-yar', 'dheg-cas', etc. Somalis are blunt when it comes to labelling foreign ethnicities.

The problem with 'black' is the history and baggage the term carries. It was specifically used by Europeans because in their culture, black denoted everything evil and bad. For this reason, they labelled their slaves 'black' and systematically stripped them of their heritage.

'African' brings to mind a land, an assortment of peoples and civilisations, etc.
