Why are somali performers doing well in Scandinavia but failing in Anglo Saxon countries ?

They have millions of streams on Spotify , won Grammys etc but it seems the U.K. Canada America are slacking . I can see why Somali musicians in America are non existent bc they live in baadiyo areas . But Canadians live in Toronto etc are involved in drakes career and the weekends so do somalis prefer to be in the background ?

I remember Amaal nuur trying to make it but for some reason she changed her whole image and tried to become a hotep Afro centric singer which flopped so now she’s back to her usual self but the momentum has passed.

K’naan doesn’t really connect with most young diaspora Somalis with his war songs but he did well with that iconic fifa song . Obviously we saw his demise when he tried to do a hbo show about terrorism in MN which flopped and he hasn’t been heard of since. ( foolish move I’m glad MN showed out )

As we all know the U.K. minorities had a brick on their shoulders when it comes to Somalis so I can see why they were not willing to support Somali musicians back in the day but they seem to have ended their beef lowkey .


Anglo Saxon Somalis (America/Canada ) are doing well when it comes to having political representation but where the musicians at. Maybe it’s the lack of competition ?

There's lack of media representation of Somalis in the UK. For instance look at Chunks, he had to dik ride Philly just to get where he is. Same way the blacks have their own platforms in the UK, there needs to be a Somali platform that encourages young Somali children and adults to get involved in the arts, media and entertainment sector.

Basically I was asking this female friend about good Somali movies, I mentioned that Qabiyo was ahead of its time and it will probably be one of the best Somali movies of all time for me. She mentioned a movie called Isfahan which was getting a lot of hype a few months back.

So I decided to give it a try and wallahi Qabiyo had a better production quality, and that's a movie that was done almost 20 years later. We need to step our game up, support one another and dive in head first into the media sector.

UK has a small music scene, lots of competition and even then the Artists in the UK only blow up & make it big in the America.

I agree. Why is Ethiopia have The Weeknd, Eritrea has Nipsey Hussle, even Kenya has Lupita, where is our own star?

It’s sad that Chunkz had to do that to get to where he is. I really hope us Somalis can reach out and be better in the entertainment world.
