Its a cultural thing, result of urbanization. My hair is shoulder length and my dad says I look girly with it. My mom doesnt mind it tho

I think that is common in many african cultures for some reason. In a west African household it would be shunned to have dreads or braids.

They are very conformist and like to keep up appearances. Instead of worrying about what makes kid happy if it’s harmless they worry what neighbors and family might say and bully to get there way

it all depends on the context/environment. for example, the ONLF fighters have really long hair and i've never heard of anyone talking bad about them. However, in other places, long hair has become associated with other things like rastas, drugs, unprofessionalism, etc.

Mix of racism and association with hood rats. Somali parents picked up on how coloured folk, especially black people, get lower job prospects with longer hair.

Parents have also noticed that most gang bangers have long hair and since our culture is very image/shame based, they don't want their sons walking around with long flowering curls or a 15 inch afro in fear a local other habar yar will shit talk about them on some whatsapp gc.
