Who really destroyed Somalia

Please be open minded and read the entire post. Throughout the years since the collapse of the state in 1991 people have pushed the blame on many different groups. This clan destroyed Somalia or that militia destroyed Somalia. The fact of the matter is, the people who share most of the blame for the destruction of Somalia is none other than Somali women. Somali women have been behind every major catastrophe in our history since the birth of the state in 1960. During the 1977 invasion of Ethiopia, not a single Somali woman was seen on the front lines. After the failure to annex galbeed into the country, discord arose between clans across the state engineered by women. It is no secret in Somali culture women are the ones usually calling upon "tolka" for war between clans. Post 1991 when the state fell into absolute chaos, it was men who brokered peace, men who initiated reconciliation conferences, and men who put the arms down. Even today, clan xaflads where tribalism is celebrated and promoted to the youth are administered by women. A good example of this is the samaroon lady who made the song saying "amhara are closer to me than anyone passed garowe". I think its time we address the elephant in the room guys

When we failed to annex Ogaden back in 1977 is when Somalinimo died. After that everyone only cared about their Qabil and not their fellow Somali. Yeah ur right most Somali women are behind the fkd and qabil rhetoric but it's mainly the Somali people themselves who failed their country. No outside interference whatsoever.

the failure of Somalia falls on the shoulders of every gaalo qabilist that exists within Somalia, men and women alike. There would be no need for reconciliation if the men weren’t being tribalistic animals. The women who drum up Qabalyad have as much as blood on their hands as the men.

Somalia is not destroyed, we are only going through a rough patch like every nation. The future is bright Inshaa Allah. The past was a valuable lesson only.

As for who is to blame. No one is to blame. Work on making yourself a better human being, and the world will be better for it.

No they do not. Somali women exist in an extremely patriarchal society. To survive, they have to follow what men want. If men decided that qabiil was bad and illegal women would think that too. Stop trying equalise the blame like it was who were in these militias.

Somali women are independent on their own, their own thinkers. They can easily condemn Qabalyad, I’ve seen it happen many times on video when they gather together to publicly condemn tribal related injustice. I’ve seen the opposite too, when they gather together like a bunch of knife wielding animals calling for tribal war. Not all Somali women are innocent in this, a lot of them are equally complicit as the men. It’s a societal issue not necessarily a gender one. Whoever is complicit is complicit

The question of who destroyed Somalia doesn’t have a simple answer, but if we’re pointing fingers, Siad Barre’s regime played a massive role. While Somalia’s problems didn’t start with him, his rule (1969–1991) deepened the divisions that ultimately led to the country’s collapse.

Barre came to power promising to end tribalism and unite Somalia under a socialist government. But instead of uniting the country, he fueled clan divisions. He favored his own Marehan clan and allied with the Ogaden and Dhulbahante clans, creating a power structure that marginalized others, especially the Isaaq in the north. His policies were openly tribal, and his brutal crackdown on dissent like the 1988 bombing of Hargeisa, which killed tens of thousands of Isaaq civilians showed how far he was willing to go to maintain control.

Barre’s regime also destroyed Somalia’s economy. His socialist policies led to widespread corruption and inefficiency, while his wars, like the disastrous Ogaden War with Ethiopia (1977–1978), drained the country’s resources. By the late 1980s, Somalia was bankrupt, and clan-based militias were rising up against his rule. When Barre was finally overthrown in 1991, the country descended into chaos, and the civil war that followed tore Somalia apart.

But let’s be honest Barre didn’t act alone. The tribal divisions he exploited were already there. Somalia’s unity in 1960 was fragile because clan loyalty often came before national identity. Leaders before Barre, like Abdirashid Sharmarke, tried to hold the country together, but tribalism was always a ticking time bomb. Barre just lit the fuse.

In the end, Siad Barre’s regime was the catalyst for Somalia’s destruction, but the real problem was the deep seated tribalism that has plagued Somali society for generations. Until Somalis can move beyond clan politics, the cycle of division and conflict will continue.
