Populations turn towards pastoralism to meet the carrying capacity of the land and the challenges that come with it to maximize survival since it is mostly arid. People's perception of herding is backward and uneducated. Humans pick up livestock-based transhumance only when they have to, i.e., when the land is unsuitable for indefinite farming. And when some farming potentiality is available, you see a mixed subsistence strategy form.

Of course, the pastoralists share an ideology that elevates the status of dealing with domesticates rather than tilting land, but that is a noble ancient view since the time of pre-historic Nubia, and even agro-leaning ancient Nubians shared this view from what I have read. Pure nomadism was never our way, ever in history. It was always a mixed synergistic economy where settled, farming, and pastoralists covered for each other through effective trade, which compounded with sea-borne trade. There were no barriers between settled, pastoralists, and traders; this was a coherent economic system without these rigidified "nomads" and "city people" nonsense pushed by, again, uneducated people.

Urbanization is linked with decreased birth rates, no doubt accompanied by other correlational variables in this Western-centric period. Look at the birthrate of the Somali region of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa. The discrepancy is ridiculous.
