Which opinion on Somalis has you like this?

Af somali is the closest thing to proto east cushitic.
I'm not an expert in this but isn't af maay more archaic than af maxaa tiri and so closer to proto east cushitic? At least this is what Ali Jimale Ahmed argued in "the invention of Somalia"

Ah my bad i meant to say somali as in somali with all it's dialect. Af maay is indeed conservative and preserved many word that the northern somali dialect lost that's for sure but i wouldn't sell af maxaa short.

The rendille and bayso both of whom are old somaloid languages appears to be at least when it comes to vocabularies closer to af maxaa than af maay. Certain word such as fadhase and koy are also found in af maxaa where we say fadh ama ha fadhin or dadkan wa koyto meaning they're arrivals. Ultimate it could be that both are an ancient dialect from proto somali or as i beileve proto east cushitic.
